How to Find Good Dissertation Title
The first thing a reader sees is the dissertation title. How the title is coined to capture the breadth and scope of the study, succinctly, is a stroke of genius. The title of the dissertation will either lure the reader to open the book or leave it languishing on the shelf.
Indeed it may appear that the title decides readership appeal. The creation of an effective phrase for an investigative study is part of dynamic thesis planning. If desperate, try getting some ideas for an appropriate name.
Students employ different tactics in formulating the thesis heading. They may go for intriguing questions or declarative sentences that smack of authority. Others will prominently display the keyword that may help boost readership and findability. Still some will go the extremes of using arresting street jargon to make their studies more appealing and reflective of the times. The psychology student will go for shorter titles knowing that people have short attention spans. Give them a short catchy title, and they can remember it. Give them a long important sounding title and they remember only a word or two. The keyword should be placed strategically in a long sentence.
There is no harm in trying out several titles before settling on one. Read them to your self, sound these out to family and friends, until a title gets most of the popularity votes. As the work progresses, check the relevance of the title. Is it still appropriate? Does it relate to the new direction taken by the study? Sometimes the title of the dissertation may differ from the one entered in the research proposal. This may result during the course of the investigation but must always be approved by the Dissertation Committee. In reverse, the Committee may suggest a change in the title. Since the project name appears prominently on the title page it should be worthy of its place.
During the hectic preparation for the thesis, thinking about the title is relegated to the background or is the last thing that comes to mind. When the final version has been selected and it appears too long, the only remedy would be to break or shorten the name. No matter how long or short the title is, be direct in the choice of words.
In crafting the dissertation title, place the more important words somewhere near the beginning of the title – this has proven effective for title recall. Undergraduate thsis titles present a vast array of interesting and sometimes novel tags. However students must not only rely on the titles for readership mileage. They must see to the relevance of the title to the content and vice versa. When in doubt seek the advice of your adviser; remember they have a wealth of experience that you can mine.
