Abstract;

Keats’s narrative poetry, its value and importance, has held an ambiguous place in English literary criticism. It has often been termed juvenilia and been relegated to the sidelines in the serious evaluation of the poet’s work. My thesis proposes to evaluate it in the light of modern day situations and problems. This poetry grew out of real life struggles and tensions in the life of a young man torn by the demands of art and life and desperately endeavoring to find a threshold that could accommodated his diverse experiences. My observation of similar struggles among the modern youth prompts me to find answers from a great thinker and philosopher of a troubled age.

A thorough reading and interpretation of the narrative poems along with a detailed perusal of his letters provides a perspective for investigation into the problem balancing ideal with real and finding a way to live in both worlds. The rationale for the research lies in the socio-cultural crisis that the present generation is facing. It is in many ways similar to the crisis of faith and direction suffered in the 18th century when the Western world was changing from an agrarian society to industrial one. An understanding of the relationship between dream and reality will form a part of the thesis.
