Tips on Dissertation Introduction Writing

You find yourself sitting in front of your desktop ready to get your fingers working on your dissertation. You have finally mustered the courage to face up to such a daunting task. After all, your time for useless procrastinations is up. Then you suddenly ask yourself a very important question (at least for the moment): ”What should I include in my dissertation introduction?

A good introduction goes straight to pointing out the main problem. You want your writing clear and concise. There is no need for adding beginning sentences. This basically amounts to less flowery words. Now you don’t have to try hard to be creative or inventive (at least in the writing part). But don’t breathe your sigh of relief just yet. Much as you don’t need creative writing skills, you will need all the skills and competence in the conduct of research. And you actually have to sound the part. Keep in mind that you have to convince a committee consisting of members who are experts in the field. You have to sound as credible as possible.

Other things you can include are the following: the significance of the study, a summary of the methodology used, definition of terms, and a short summary—pretty much like your ordinary thesis. But this description of what your introducing part should consist is broad and general. Take note that requirements usually vary among different universities. The key is to find out what your university expects to see in your thesis. Be very meticulous with details.

You can start by looking into papers already approved by your university. Check for the components included in the introductive part. Be especially observant of the research methodologies they use. More importantly, do not hesitate to ask for a detailed instruction from your adviser.

An important reminder—always keep in mind that the trend in dissertation writing nowadays is making it shorter and concise. Your introduction part should follow suit.

But writing your introduction is really the least of your problems. Especially if you have a well planned thesis project in place. Your plan should put everything under control that writing your introduction becomes a breeze. It will also be helpful if you are genuinely interested in your topic. You know how it is when you are really into what you’re writing. You can go on and on that you find it hard to stop, until trying to stick to a shorter content requirement becomes a problem.

Something you should be worried about is your funding. Be sure you have a clear picture of the research materials and equipments your paper will require. You may need a scholarship grant to cover the costs. You have to know though that dissertation scholarships are not easy to come by and preparations should be made a year or so ahead of time. Once you have your scholarship and project in place, you won’t have to be one of the many stressed out walking zombies in your university.
