Thesis topics

Thesis topics are the headings or titles that are given to research work that is presented in the written form. They convey the central thrust of the researcher’s work either through experimentation or extensive study of a subject. These titles are of great relevance since they introduce the subject matter to the reader and guide his mind in the proper direction. Besides this, they also provide an insight into the researcher’s attitude towards the chosen subject matter. The research proposal and literature review are the vital points.

Though the primary objective of any heading is to attract attention to the contents of the text, in research work there we find an exception to the rule. This is primarily due to the nature of the work that is undertaken. It is a culmination of a period of study and searching for answers that the researcher has posed to himself and also tried to answer. Consequently, these headings are not expected to be catchy in the ordinary sense. Their interest lies more in their ability to convey in a nutshell the entire content of the document. Moreover, you must keep in mind that the paper is meant for the eyes of a select few. This too affects the nature of the title.

The length of the heading depends on the work that is done. It is usual to find these headings accompanied by sub-headings too as in this way the writer is able to include a wider range of his work objective. Another point at which they differ from usual headings is that they are purely technical and academic in style and tone. The titles are often framed as direct questions or as a combination of sentence and question.

Titles also depend on the level of research work that is undertaken by the student. In the undergraduate state the heading is tailored more to investigating and exploring a given area of study. Research undertaken at this stage is not expected to be original so also the heading is a general one for a group of students. On the other hand, in postgraduate and doctoral research the title is original and personal too.

Before choosing a statement the student or researcher needs to be very confident of and conversant with the work that he has done. This will help him in summarizing it in the briefest possible way. In addition to this, the words that are used need to be selected with great care. There should be no ambiguity in the title if it is to convey a correct impression to the targeted audience.

Thesis topics are the first to be noticed and evaluated by the reader. So they are of great importance for the student or scholar to hit upon the most appropriate one. An incorrect or inappropriate title would be an embarrassment at the least and could be a signal for rejection in extreme cases. The heading can and does give sense and direction to the written dissertation by drawing attention to the most important aspect of the work. They represent the entire reason for undertaking and executing the project and at the same time provide a framework within which the topic is restricted by the student or scholar.
