Good thesis statements
Good thesis statements are basically the road map for the paper. It gives an impression to the reader of what to expect from the rest of the paper. In most of the cases it is a single sentence that represents the writer argument to the reader. It should be such that it will persuade the reader to go through the body of the paper. It usually appears in the first paragraph more specifically at the end of the first paragraph.
In analytical paper it should clearly illustrates the problem which the rest of the paper will analyze. In argumentative paper it will deal with the issue we want to deal with and the procedure which our argument will follow. It should be very specific clearly stating the topic we want to deal with in the rest of the paper. This will work as a guide statement for the reader, whether it is college or professional world.
All the issues that we want to deal with; easy to highly complicated can be express in one or two sentences that is specific and clearly states the main issue and arises interest. If the issues can be modified in a single point then it will be easy for the reader to comprehend. In case if we express the main issues in more than one point then it will be harder for the reader to comprehend.
It must remain flexible until we have actually finished the paper. If in the process of writing we find any new information our paper should include the new findings and we shall rewrite the statement again. If we find that we can’t express the amount of actual work in the body by one or two statements we have to limit the area of our sentence.
We can’t change the statement without the prior approval of the thesis committee so we should be utmost careful at the time of choosing the first one. So it should be such that makes a definite and specific assertion which will be followed by further discussion. It gives an indication of the methodology that we have pursued in the rest of my paper.
It gives an indication of the difficulties that we will be facing in the rest of the paper. It should be provocative and it should justify the discussion you will present. It should be specific and focused. It proves a point without discussing the details of the body. It will help us to assert our own conclusion which is based on evidence. If the conclusion shows us different evident then we need to change the initial paragraph. It will provide the reader the map to guide through the work. It also anticipates and refutes counter arguments.
Good thesis statements must take into account avoiding vague language and first person for making good signs. It has to answer the main questions of our text. If it does, then it is actually fulfilling our purpose. If it doesn’t we have to try for other statements until we get the desired one fulfilling our criteria.
