A Good thesis – Procedure In Different Countries
A good thesis carries a depth of knowledge everywhere. It depicts the personality of the doctoral candidate. It is a milestone in the life of the scholar. The life of the scholar revolves around his thesis until it gets completed.Â
Though the importance of an effective thesis statement is unmatched all over, there are different types of practices worldwide that segregate the procedures in continents. In addition, the doctorate, academic and post-graduate degrees vary in different localities. In some places, it is affiliated to the university that has all powers. In some areas, the education boards run the examinations and they are the highest authority. The end-result is same, that is production of intellectuals for the benefit of the society.
In UK, thesis is an important event in the life of a student applying for M.Phil. degree or a Ph.D. doctorate. Nowadays, it is claimed that UK alone has the highest number of online courses for writing a thesis and help their students aware of minute nuances in writing. Almost all scholars opt for these tuitions to make their work perfect, though the ‘Self’ factor matters always. While conducting oral defense, UK laws are quite stringent as compared to other countries. Here the examination is a strictly private affair. Only two or at the most three examiners conduct the viva voce.
In Canadian universities, study associated with the master’s degree is referred to as “mémoire.†The one associated with the doctor’s degree is called “thèse.” The examiners’ committee can award excellence to the candidate depending on his performance and knowledge on how to write a dissertation. The number of pages for any research work can vary between 200 to 400 pages. In US however, the doctoral students also need to make a track of the thesis in order to acquire graduation. In US, the number of doctorates who opt for the job is much higher as the universities value their disciples’ knowledge and skill. The university also helps them to pursue further research by employing them in the premises.
In North America, there is a practice of private or public examination of viva for the candidate. Typically, around five members judge the capability of the scholar. In most of the European countries however, there is much gusto associated with the oral defense examination. The candidate in presence of examiners, family, and friends is questioned pertaining to his research work. He has to answer until the crowd is satisfied. This strongly determines his future reputation and publishing of his research review. In the US, a much longer ‘thesis talk’ by the candidate precedes the actual viva. He needs to put forward the future scope of his research work.
In Bosnia, France, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark, the viva is termed as ‘soutenance’. An external examiner holds the seat of honour during the procedure. He is an expert on the research topic. In disputation, he is known as an ‘opponent’ when he denies certain facts and the author is called a ‘respondent’ who supports his theories. The opponent at times holds authority not to pass the candidate though it is a very rare occasion. In countries like Netherlands, an unsuccessful submission of the thesis is an extremely rare thing to happen as the matter is thoroughly revised by the examiners before proceeding to the defense.
Finally, when the candidate is allotted the doctorate for a good thesis after unanimous voting, he is on top of the world receiving the honorary campaign as a token!  Â
