Volcanic activity is defined as the ejection of the material from the interior of the earth to the surface. Such material is called volcanic material. This may include solid boulders or ashes, molten magma or the gaseous substances. The molten rock material is called magma. Upon reaching the surface of the earth it is called lava. Sometimes, however this material may not be able to reach the surface and it may get deposited in the layers of the crystal rocks. Volcanoes are classified as active, dormant and extinct on the basis of the frequency of eruption. That keep erupting at short intervals or that have erupted in recent past are called active. Mt. Etna in Sicily and Cotopaxi of Ecuador are examples of this type. That have not erupted for a long time but it is likely to erupt in the future are called dormant.

Mt. Vesuvius is an example of this type. Those have not erupted for a very long time and are not likely to erupt are called extinct. They are considered to be dead. Mt. Aconcagua of Argentine Andes is an example of this type. These classification is however arbitrary in nature. A volcano considered extinct may become active and in such a case it will be considered as active.

All parts of the world are not equally prone to volcanic activity. It is most common in areas of crustal instability. According to the theory of plate tectonics volcanic activity is associated with associated with areas of plate divergence and convergence. Plate divergence is generally associated with the rising and diverging convection currents. As a result of the divergence of the convection currents in the sub stratum, the lithosphere is pulled apart over such zones and the molten rock material rises along the fracture thus produced.

A typical example of areas where this activity is observed is the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Emergence of molten material along these fracture zones leads to the formation of new crust and sea floor spreading. Areas of plate convergence are characterized with sinking convection currents and the sinking currents tend to pull the lithosphere into the sub stratum. Generally the denser oceanic plates yield to this down ward pull more readily than the lighter continental plates.

The sinking edge of the plate gets molten in the sub stratum and this leads to an increase in its volume. The increased volume of the molten material in the interior leads to usually explosive activity in such zones. One such region is the rim of the Pacific Ocean where the maximum of the active volcanoes are situated. This area is called the Pacific Ring of Fire. Another important belt runs from the Mediterranean Sea through south west Asia and Himalayas to the pacific coast.
