Writing a good research proposal
For decades, research proposal has been the most prime part of any post-graduate student. He is known to the world in future through his work on the subject. Not only the detailing of the data is important but also the investigation he put forward needs to be evaluated. It states the lessons he learnt during the study period. He argues this whole document in favor of a particular thesis proposal he believes in.
He evaluates the concepts and performs on the decided path. In acceptance or denial of a particular identity, he fights his battle. His weapons are words encapsulated by a stupendous task of analysis and factual themes. Apart from this, the work needs to strictly follow a grammatical sense. It cannot use colloquial language. Technical disgrace, jargons or slang should not burden it. It should be a crystal clear document. The terminology and prose should be very clear and understandable. Your language should convey the intended meaning rather than confusing the reader. The most rigorous rules of logic should be followed, as it is a scientific work.
Each dissertation proposal can be a probable medium of discussions with fellow scientists. It communicates the new discoveries that a student makes with his work. Therefore, a scarcity of ideas in your work depicts poor communication. A free flow of ideas bound together by a thread of logic is necessary to have an impact. Each term used in the write-up needs to be defined precisely. You should also give references of already published definitions that you used for your work. You can also coin a definition that is clear and eligible. The terms used should not have multiple views in your writing. It should carry one understandable meaning all throughout.
Do not make judgments with your review guide. Your language should not contain words like bad, nice, stupid, etc. Whatever you want to support or deny should have a precise reasoning behind it. Avoid use of terms like ‘lots of’, ‘kind of’, ‘something like’, etc., as these vague terminologies do not have a place in scientific literature works. Reference to second person by saying, ‘as you can see’, should be avoided. Even your own reference like ‘I will take care’ etc., should be discarded. Remember it is a formal document.
Use present tense sentences along with an active voice. Stay away from the overuse of adverbs. If you use mathematical symbols for your description, it becomes much easier than use of English language. In math, rules of logic are simple to follow. Try to stick to the main plan of ideas. Do not indulge in telling the procedures by which you ‘happen to’ find the solution. For readers, the solution is important. Do not allow the mystical influences handle your results.
Discard the style of “just†listing the data in your research proposal. The data is of value when you analyze, process and combine the facts. There is no short cut course to success. Hard work cannot be compensated for any other ‘magic’. Patience and sheer hard work can be seen in the writings of scholars. This is the proposal that your publishers look for to have maximum profit and good name.  Â
